In case you hadn't heard, an infamous criminal was captured last week following a lengthy manhunt. And I don't mean Whitey Bulger. NYC subway patrons can ride the trains without fear once more, now that 26-year-old Joseph Patrick Waldo, aka the Moustache Man, has been apprehended and charged with felony criminal mischief for allegedly causing $1,500 in damage by defacing ads in MTA stations. Using a magic marker, the would-be Warhol wrote the word "moustache" with a distinctive cursive flourish beneath the noses of clean-shaven celebs and models in various advertisements. Before his identity was revealed, the Rembrandt of the rails provided this insight into his art: "We're getting these ridiculous images and dumb catch phrases shoved down our throats, why shouldn't we be able to talk back? So many ads are so laughably stupid that a cartoonish moustache just seems to fit." It's unclear if he was specifically referring to the WPIX campaign, but let's assume he was. Since his arrest, Waldo has broken down and issued a wussified apology: "I'm sorry for my actions and have agreed to fully cooperate and never do it again." Disappointing. I expected him to keep a stiff upper lip.
